Title: Carbon Replacements
Series: The McAllister Justice Series #4
Author: Reily Garrett
Genre: Romantic Thriller
Release Date: September 9, 2018
Cover Designer: Rylan Killian
The killer held a knife to her throat—the ultimate decision locked within a dark and deviant gaze.
Determined and dedicated, forensic pathologist Remie Tallin validates her talent by detailing a victim’s last moments of life. Returning to Portland signified her new beginning where a psychopathic stalker designates her a pawn in a seductive game of intrigue.

The lines between predator and prey blur in hunting a medical genius bent on resetting the laws of nature. Evidence has never failed to point Remie in the right direction, yet conflicting discoveries mock the legal system and defy the scientific arena for clarification.
Detective McAllister’s return from leave includes a new assignment along with a partner well versed in subtle sarcasm and innuendos. Discovering the new medical examiner unconscious at the scene of a grisly murder forces him to unite with his brothers against a world of chaos where reality shifts according to a psychopath’s desire.

“Wendy, I’m t-tellin’ you, the man’s a serial killer. He has the body of a Greek God, but his mind is full of squirming maggots.” Gena stifled a sob with a shaking hand, her body wedging back against the driver’s door after twisting to face her roommate beside her. “He’s more depraved than any fucker we’ve ever crossed, and he’s going to find me.” Aftereffects of the adrenaline rush magnified tremors in her fingers and lips while increasingly shallow breaths expelled carbon dioxide faster than her body could produce it. No doubt, the by-products of dizziness, cramps, and weakness crept into her awareness. Fear-sweat on her forehead glistened from distant flashes of lightning.
“Hey, slow down. Take a deep breath. You’re new to this and easily spooked. Just because men are pigs doesn’t mean they’re murderers. Take the money he gave you and don’t see him again. Change your number. Lay low for a bit.” Wendy startled with the repetitive crash of thunder reverberating in the Honda’s dark and eerie confines. “Can I at least see what’s got your panties in a twist?” She reached for the black cloth covering her friend’s evidence only to be pushed away.
“Oh God, Wendy. I shouldn’t have dragged you and Remie out here tonight. The creep knows I’m a sophomore, but I didn’t tell him which college. I don’t want him to find either of you.”
“Shit, Gena. I may be a student, but I can take care of myself.” A note of uncertainty snaked through Wendy’s voice.
From the back seat, Remie contemplated the wind’s increasing fury, so like her own, sweeping, all encompassing, erratic. Parked along a deserted back road hours before dawn didn’t equate to a tranquil setting when listening to accusations of murder. I should’ve brought my dog. Buckeye would’ve waited in the SUV. She’d just moved back to Portland and lacked the normal discreet channels of investigation derived from time-developed working relationships. Not that I’ve figured out what the problem is yet.
Small raindrops pattering the passenger window progressed to a heavy deluge that silvered with the dashboard’s ambient light. It was a perfect night to snuggle under a blanket with a cup of cocoa and a scary book. Living the scenario brought the rancid taste of bile scalding Remie’s throat.
“Girls, you know I’m a doctor, not a cop, right? What happened to toning life down to live like normal human beings? No more adrenaline junkie. Gena, it’s not like you need the money for tuition. Jesus, if your parents knew what you were doing for thrills, it would kill them both.” Years of schooling in forensic pathology aged Remie decades in the eyes of college girls too naïve to avoid such foolish and dangerous behavior. More than ten years difference thrust her into the role of adopted mentor to the neighborhood wild child with crazy tattooed on her brain.
“Jesus. I’m so sorry, Remie. You spent a night in the hospital last week after wrecking your car. You don’t need this.” Unspoken recriminations gathered around Gena like a smoldering blanket, the flameless combustion withering her resolve.
“I’m fine. The few scrapes and bruises have already healed.”
“I figured a few tricks for kicks, no harm. It’s not like I don’t use condoms, and we’ve only done it a couple times.”
“The harm is that there are real nutjobs out there. Deranged people you do not want to meet. Trust me. I see the results of their work every day during necropsies. It’s what I do… remember?” Visions of Gena lying on a cold slab while an ME separated the upper part of her cranium to create a removable skullcap strengthened Remie’s determination to see the situation resolved.
“Roomie, what makes you think he was a killer? Did he threaten you? Did you see a gun?” Wendy laid a calming hand on her roommate’s arm. “Hell, everybody has guns these days. I’ve got a .357 stashed in my bedside table. Let some psycho come to my dorm looking for easy targets—he’ll get a hollow-point surprise.”
Gena, the cute little kid from the farm next door with wide hazel eyes and curly brown hair had grown up with a nose for trouble, yet usually lacked affiliation with high drama. With the start of the spring semester, the risky escapades should’ve ceased.
“While he was in the can, I picked the lock on his briefcase, thinking he was some kind of lawyer or something.” If not for the frightened gaze bouncing between the proof clenched in her fingers and the nebulous woods on either side of the lonely road, Gena could’ve been any college student recounting a dicey hazing ritual. The tone and pitch of her voice increased when she unfolded the fabric covering her stolen treasure. “I saw syringes full of something, along with empty containers, and these. I also found alcohol swabs and betadine solution. Who carries betadine in a briefcase?”
“You stole from a John? Are you crazy?” Wendy snatched the wooden box with a huff and a groan.
Detailing around the container’s top edge included an intricate inlay bearing a darker grain. Similar designs decorated urns. “You better hope we can return them before he notices they’re gone. Where did you hook up?”
Wendy slid the lid back on the six-by-six inch square. The smooth glide on concealed grooves further testament to the boosted prize’s value.
Shadows shielded the contents from Remie’s view.
Wendy’s high-pitched scream rendered the burgeoning storm to white noise, instinctual awareness hurling the box’s contents against the windshield. Their arc proved too fast to visually track. Two pink lumps, small and irregularly shaped, formed the basis for a new nightmare.
The rattle and thump of the container ended when it landed perched on the steering wheel, upside down.
“Fuck! What the hell are those?” First medical school, then forensic pathology, enlightened Remie to evil’s worst-case scenarios. Her mom once said that after indoctrination, nothing new would appear under the sun. Whoever created this mayhem transcended anything evolved from humanity’s convoluted gene pool.

A sudden gust of wind and rain blew in as the driver’s door flew open. Gena lurched forward and hunched away from the torrent of slashing storm riding the invading cool blast. Her descent into hell included a flash of silver and guttural laugh.

Reily is a West Coast girl transplanted to the opposite shore. When she’s not working with her dogs, you can find her curled up with a book or writing her next story. Past employment as an ICU nurse, private investigator, and work in the military police has given her countless experiences in a host of different environments to add a real world feel to her fiction.

Over time, and several careers, many incidents have flavored the plots of her stories. Man’s cruelty and ingenuity for torment and torture is boundless, not contained by an infinite imagination. Witnessing the after-effects of a teenager mugged at knifepoint for a pair of tennis shoes, or an elderly woman stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver for no apparent reason, left an indelible impression that will forever haunt her subconscious. In counterpoint, she has observed a woman stop her vehicle in severe, snowy weather to offer her own winter coat to a stranger, a teenager wearing a threadbare hoodie. Life’s diversities are endless.

Though her kids are her life, writing is Reily’s life after. The one enjoyed after the kids are in bed or after they’re in school and the house is quiet. This is the time she kicks back with laptop and lapdog to give her imagination free rein.
In reading, take pleasure in a mental pause as you root for your favorite hero/heroine and bask in their accomplishments, then share your opinions of them over a coffee with your best friend (even if he’s four-legged). Life is short. Cherish your time.

Even at thirty seven, with a challenging but rewarding career as a paramedic, Bella Gomez is treated as the baby of the family. It’s made her allergic to anyone meddling, so she chooses to keep mostly to herself. Unfortunately that doesn’t stop her family from inserting themselves in her life. Nor does it deter the one man she knows she shouldn’t get close to from showing up on her doorstep.

Jasper Greene, an FBI agent with the La Plata County field office, doesn’t even know the meaning of family. His team is his family, which is why—when his boss asks him to keep an eye on his baby sister—Jasper readily complies. Even when the sister in question is a spectacularly developed princess with plenty of attitude.

With a shooter on the loose and corruption running rampant, Bella is a magnet for trouble, and Jasper finds himself with his hands full—in more ways than one.

The ceremony was lovely, and I swear I saw my brother surreptitiously brush away a tear. Something I will file away for future use, should I need some extra leverage.

Of course I was back on Jasper’s arm, following the newly married couple back to the house, and just like the walk up the aisle, he was silent. A tad unsettling, since what little I know of him, he never seems at a loss for words. The silence felt ominous.
I’m reminded of that when I spot him coming out of the house, holding a beer bottle by the neck between two fingers, casually making his way over. I look for an escape but am weighed down by Kim’s little boy, who I offered to watch while his parents dance under the strings of lights covering the roof of the rented canopy tent. Exhausted from the long day, Asher fell asleep on my lap in seconds, his warm cheek pressed against my cleavage. There’s no way I can slink away with a sleeping toddler plastered to my boobs.
“Your scar is showing,” he says, pulling out a chair and sitting down, his back to the dance floor.
“Shit.” I try to reach around Asher to tug my dress into place, but part of my skirt is wedged underneath his little butt.
“Lift him up.”
Fearing my family will make a scene if they see my injury, I do as he orders, but throw in a scathing look for good measure. A blush quickly replaces it, when I feel the surprisingly rough pads of his fingers brush the skin where my thick thighs are pressed together. My body responds immediately, and I’m suddenly grateful for the little boy on my lap, effectively hiding the evidence.
Damn that man. I mentally scold myself for responding to him the way I do. It’s like it’s genetically ingrained for me to be attracted to this type of guy. Handsome, charming, charismatic, and easily distracted by the next piece of fluff darting in front of his eyes. It’s not healthy.
“Last thing I expected was to find you sitting here looking like some kind of modern-day Madonna with a child on your lap. I’d figured you’d be partying it up on the dance floor by now.” His raspy voice draws me from my musings, and I’m not quite sure whether to be insulted or flattered right now.
“And I’m surprised you sat down to join me, I keep looking around to see where you might have left your flavor of the day.”
Clearly I went with insulted, echoing back what I choose to take as a negative characterization. His eyes go big in his head as he looks around him, appearing confused.
“Flavor of the day?”
“Your date? The tall blonde I saw you schmoozing with at dinner?”
Last thing I expected was the deep belly laugh escaping from his wide smile.

Cabin 12 (Rock Point Series Book 2)

Freya Barker

Every single time, and I mean—Every-Single-Time—I pick up a new book from Freya Barker, I say the same thing, “Oh my god! This is definitely the best book she’s ever written!” Am I going to say it again? Oh, hell yes!

Cabin 12 takes place in Durango, Colorado, and revolves around Bella Gomez, who we were introduced to in the first book of the series, Keeping 6, and Jasper Greene, an FBI agent who works for Damian Gomez, Bella’s brother.

Bella is something else! She’s an EMT who’s great at her job, compassionate, smart, but sassy with a serious bite to her. She’s the youngest of five children who grew up in a crazy and loud and loving Latino household, and where the answer to every problem can be solved with her overbearing Ma’s tamales and the like—but sometimes … you can scream and not be heard.

Jasper sees her and hears her. He always has. I absolutely love how he winds his way into Bella’s life, which isn’t an easy thing to do when, Damian, his boss and Bella’s uber-protective brother are one and the same! But since Damian and Kerry are away, well … Jasper slowly but surely gains Bella’s friendship and trust as both their jobs entwine with the other’s. He has the ability to calm the storms that rage inside of Bella just when she needs it. The more time they spend together, Jasper catches on pretty quickly as to what’s going on with Bella. As much as the two banter, or should I say Bella banters, they both are very aware of what they mean to each other. Jasper is smart, sexy-as-hell, funny, and almost as uber-protective of Bella as her brother. Considering the way he deals with “the tornado” that is the Gomez family, Jasper is a saint.

Cabin 12 has plenty of thrilling suspense with lots of twists and turns as the local PD and the FBI try to solve multiple murders taking place in Durango. As this unfolds, the rest of the amazing cast of characters come into play. Bella’s partner, Ryan, is THE BEST and knows exactly how to handle Bella. They have a great working relationship. Luna, Blackfoot, and Dylan are genuinely likable characters, too, who all play a huge part in bringing justice to those who deserve it.

Along with an incredible supporting cast, I love the side stories going on that help to create a storyline that’s rich and overflowing. There’s also a couple of serious topics that are touched upon, such as depression and sexual harassment in the workplace.

I simply cannot rave enough about this book. Freya Barker’s writing style is akin to how we all think and speak ourselves. Freya’s talent astounds me with every word she spins and weaves, and Cabin 12 is no exception. Five stars aren’t nearly enough for this gem!

Charming Taylor Samuels doesn’t expect his sister’s video audition for the reality television show The World Traveler to result in anything. But when they’re chosen to compete, he can do nothing but hope for the best.

Adam Scott’s best friend wants them to try to get on The World Traveler, and so Adam reluctantly agrees to make him happy.

As the reality sets in that they’ll competing, Adam tries not to panic too much.

Little do they know that a twist in the show will see Taylor and Adam’s worlds collide in a way they never imagined.

Will everything go horribly wrong, or could this be the perfect beginning to a wonderful journey?

E9B09B6C-DCBF-4346-BCDD-DF11A1D481B9

The World Traveler by Claire Castle is a fun filled and refreshing book about two contestants, each with their own partners, who wind up falling for each other while traveling the globe.

Adam, and his friend, Anderson, are teammates from Chicago, while Taylor, and his sister, Jess, reside in San Francisco.

The journey starts at Wrigley Field in Chicago, where all the contestants from the TV show, The World Traveler, congregate to gather information as to what will come next—

Let the games begin! Loosely akin to the show The Amazing Race, the teamed-up couples are sent on one adventure after another, with stops in London to Rome to Islamabad to Calgary and many places in between, in a wild race to complete all the requirements before moving on to the next. But somewhere along the way, the contestants were assigned to a different partner than the one they started out with for the remainder of the challenge.

Adam meet Taylor. Taylor meet Adam. How convenient since these two have subtly had the hots for each other since Wrigley Field!

As Adam and Taylor begin their journey together as teammates, they find out just how suitable they are for each other—with and without the cameras rolling. Who knew that Adam would be the one to excel in swimming and bungee jumping, while Taylor can actually sing and dance! Afterwards, when the two were done for the day, they both seemed to excel in their hotel-room-activities as well!

Each time they make it through another elimination, they trust and lean on one another even more so. As they fall in-sync and realize it’s highly likely they could win, they also fall in love; suddenly, the challenge doesn’t seem as important as what will become of them after it’s all over.

I loved Adam and Taylor. They equally brought something to the table—their humor, intelligence, vulnerability, and sex-appeal—all  blended together perfectly, and I couldn’t help but root for them  as they raced to their happily ever after. I recommend this one if you’re looking for a light and enjoyable feel-good read ~

5888A3EA-45BC-4A6A-A4D9-458413FE6FE7Q & A spotlight for Claire Castle, author of The World Traveler!

Had you always felt a desire to write from a young age?

📚Yes! I’ve been an avid reader since I was young. In summers in middle school, I kept a list on the fridge of what I read that summer. I’ve always loved reading and wanted to write, but wasn’t sure I could ever do it.

With all the fun and specific details you’ve added in the story, was there a lot of research involved for what goes on behind the scenes of a televised show?

📚There was quite a bit, but it was fun to me! It is tricky to get the fine line of integrating the information into a story and not making it sound like a textbook you are forced to read! I’m a huge fan of The Amazing Race.

Have you been to any of the destinations mentioned in the book?

📚Yes I have. The Scotland and Canada destinations.

What made you choose the countries that you did?

📚I wanted to have lots of variety. I think that was the important thing. The world is such a vast, amazing place! I picked some I am familiar with, but others that are intriguing and new. The ones that spoke to me.

Now, every time I hear “Safe and Sound” by Capital Cities, I think of Adam and Taylor! Do you listen to music while you’re writing, in general?

📚Oh wow! I hoped that would happen. You’ve really made my day. Of course, for me, it is “their” song. Sometimes I listen to music, but not always. I go back and forth.

Do you pull your cupcakes apart like Adam does? My hubby does the same thing.

📚LOL yes! Go Adam & your hubby.

Superman or Batman?

📚Superman.

Would you ever consider writing another adventure/love story for the same show with different contestants *cough … Anderson* and destinations?

📚Hmmm, great question! I do want Anderson to get his story, I’m just not entirely sure if it would be in this setting again.

How did you decide which character, Adam or Taylor, would be the most suitable for the some of the challenges?

📚They just spoke to me, and it happened. It unfolded very organically.

Are you currently working on any new projects that your readers can look forward to?

📚Yes! Thanks for asking. I’m getting a Christmas novella ready for the holiday season and working on a co-write with BL Maxwell, called Cake Clash, which takes place on a baking reality TV contest.

Thanks so much for answering these questions and giving your readers a little insight into your writing world. I, for one, can’t wait to enjoy more of your work. Best of luck to you!!!

📚Thank you so much for having me! It was great to chat.

Freya is a go-to author for me. Her words and sexy, suspenseful stories never fail to keep me reading late into the night! —Brynne Asher, Author of the Carpino and the Killers series.

“Cabin 12 captivated me from the very first page. Edge-of-your-seat pacing, dynamic characters, and the perfect amount of heat…this is without a doubt my top read of 2018!” — Anna Paige, Author of the Thrill of the Chase series

“Hey.”I whip around at the sound of Jasper’s voice, who is leaning against one of the porch posts, looking at me from under his eyebrows.

“Oh. Hey,” is all I manage, a bit tongue-tied, and more than a little embarrassed. I never even tried to contact him to thank him. Sure, I no longer have a phone, but I could easily have gotten the number off Damian.

“Damian asked me to come and take your statement.”

The closed off look on his face, combined with those dispassionate words, send me straight from embarrassed to injured, and anger wraps around me like a protective cloak.

Really?

“Oh, he did, did he? Let me get this straight; you’re telling me the reason you’re here is because my brother asked you? That’s priceless.” I don’t even bother holding back on the venom in my tone.

“Squirt…” he mumbles, but I’m already too far lost in my head of steam to let the nickname, which just days ago would make me feel safe and protected, sway me from my path.

“No. You don’t get to call me that. Didn’t take much to set you running did it? Did you suddenly decide I was too much of a challenge? Too damaged for ya? Too fragile?” Hot tears come spilling down my cheek as I rant, and I agitatedly brush at them.

“That’s not—” he starts, but I stop him with a hand in his face.

I’m angry and so hurt. I trusted him, opened up for him in a way I never had for anyone. I feel exposed to the core, and found lacking. Again.

Suddenly deflated, I squeeze my eyes shut and drop my head. “Tell my brother he can come get his damn statement himself.”

Without even looking at him, I turn back inside, swing the door shut behind me, and walk straight into Kerry, who closes me in her arms.

“Honey, maybe you should give him a chance to talk before—”

Behind me the door slams open and I’m suddenly pulled from Kerry’s hold and swung around by an angry looking Jasper.

“Goddammit, Bella,” he swears, cupping my face in his large hands and tilting it up. “Jesus, how can someone so smart get it so fucking backward?” He barely gets his words out before his lips take mine in a bruising kiss, laced with anger and regret. I find myself leaning in and almost whimper when he pulls back, leaving his forehead pressed against mine. “Don’t you see?” he mumbles softly. “It’s me who comes up short.”

Next thing I know, he is stalking out the door.

“Oh my,” Kerry whispers behind me.

“What just happened?” I ask no one in particular, trying to get my bearings after going through what feels like an emotional spin cycle. My eyes land on Kerry, who is inexplicably smiling. “What?”

“That boy’s got it bad.”

If someone took a picture of my family, I’d be the epitome of what they envisioned for themselves. I’d smile for the camera, laugh when it was appropriate and carried on with my life like there wasn’t anything wrong.
I was happy.
But it was all a lie.
Everything I knew or believed was a lie. I wasn’t happy. I was broken despite having everything anyone could ever want. I’d lay awake imagining a world where it would all vanish. Maybe then I wouldn’t feel so alone.

To the outside world, I had the perfect life.
But inside all I had were fragments of what I used to be.
A loving husband, a sweet little boy, and a white picket fence.
My life was perfect.
But it was all a lie.
