Sometimes all you need is a second chance …

Aubrey Reynolds is a small-town girl who’s made it big.

A successful Hollywood director, Aubrey doesn’t have time to linger on what could have been.

But when a routine blood test comes back with a false positive, she decides to take some time off to do the things she’s always wanted to do: taste the famous chocolate chip cookies at the Minnesota State Fair, hike the Grand Teton National Park, scuba dive in the Caribbean.

But after Aubrey admits to herself what she’s really missing, she heads back home to Dusty Valley, Oklahoma . . . and the man she left behind.

Cole Haywood is a small-town fireman and that’s just fine with him.

Sure, when the love of his life left their hometown to chase her dreams he was heartbroken and—he’ll admit—damn mad.

But Cole would have never forgiven himself if he had held Aubrey back from success.

So the last thing he expects after all these years is to walk into his favorite bar one night and find the girl he’s always loved—there—looking for him.

Maybe now’s the time to make his dreams come true.

I always knew Aubrey’s path and mine would collide one day, but I definitely wasn’t ready for it. For years I closed myself off from my feelings, but the second she came into town, they all hit me in the fucking face. I’d seen her on TV, winning her many awards, but seeing her in person hurt on a deeper level. It killed me to walk away from her, but I was so damn pissed. Ten years of pent-up emotions that I hadn’t been able to deal with were bursting out of me. I didn’t know how to cope with it.
Pulling into my driveway, I slammed on the brakes and hopped out. My chest felt like it’d been ripped wide open. I stormed inside my house and went straight for the liquor, knowing it wasn’t the way to deal with the issue. Turning up the bottle of the whiskey, I gulped down a couple of chugs. It burned the whole way down to my stomach, but it took the edge off. I don’t know how long I sat at my kitchen bar, staring at the half-drunk bottle before my brother’s voice echoed from behind.
“Has she already driven you to drinking?”
I turned around, and there was my brother, standing in the kitchen doorway. Gaze narrowed, I slammed the bottle on the counter. “How could you not tell me she was in town?”
Bennett sighed and lowered his head. “I’m sorry. There was no time.” Then he looked over at me. “After I ran into her at the fair, I took her to where she was staying and we started talking. She told me the truth about everything. You need to let her explain.”
I threw my arms in the air. “Like it’s going to make me forget the last ten years.” When Aubrey said she was filled with regret and guilt, I was too. I’d hated myself for not doing what I should’ve done when she left. Grabbing the bottle of whiskey, I set it on the kitchen table and sat down. Bennett sat across from me, his accusatory stare right on mine. We both knew Aubrey wasn’t the only one to blame.
“You two have a lot of talking to do, brother,” Bennett said. “I understand if you’re mad, and that’s okay, but you owe it to each other to work this out.”
I shook my head. “We can’t just turn back time.”
Bennett’s lips pulled up in a sly grin, and he shrugged. “Maybe not. Then again, it might be best you move on for good. That way, I can have Aubrey all to myself. If you don’t want her, I’d be happy to take her off your hands. We both know I’m better looking.”

A feeling I hadn’t felt in a long time ignited in my veins. Jealousy. Bennett knew better than to take what was mine. And there it was . . . the stark realization hitting me upside the head. I’d tried to convince myself for years that I was over Aubrey, but in fact I was still in love with her, no matter how much I wanted to hate her for leaving. I hated myself more for not following her, even when she told me not to.

Cover Design: Sarah Hansen, Okay Creations

After a lifetime of being tailed by her father’s bodyguards, Keira Shaughnessy just wants her freedom and independence, and to bond with her long-lost brothers.

On a quest to outrun her past, she turns to illegal street racing. She loves the rush, the hint of danger, and living just on the edge of losing control. The last thing she needs is a detective tailing her, no matter how hot he is or how much she’s tempted to kiss him. Again.

When Deacon Ramsey runs into Keira at a street race, he knows he should stay away. She’s reckless. Dangerous. A perfect storm. He can’t afford to blow his cover. And he’s not convinced that the daughter of a ruthless criminal can be trusted. But when Keira’s past catches up to her, Deacon just might be the only one who can save her.

“How’ve you been?” he asked, sounding as if he genuinely cared.

“Same old, same old. Currently nursing my melancholy with ice-cold vodka in the light of a full moon. Come back later and I’ll be howling at it.”

He laughed and turned my hand over, so he could read the words inked on my skin. Goosebumps pricked my arms and warmth spread through my body as he traced the letters with his fingertip like I’d done so many times. He was so close I could smell his subtle spicy scent. Something warm and woodsy. Cedar and citrus. Bergamot, maybe? It didn’t matter. He smelled good. So good that I wanted to burrow my face in his neck and breathe him in. As if reading my thoughts, he tugged me closer, his eyes flitting from my eyes to my mouth. Maybe he was remembering the feel of my lips against his.

I flattened my palms on his hard chest and leaned into him. I could feel the warmth of his skin through the fabric of his T-shirt, his heart beating a steady rhythm under my fingertips. Deacon was the calm to my storm. The kind of man you could rely on to be there for you, to keep you safe and protect you. It confused me that I’d want that from him when I’d never wanted it from anyone before.

I didn’t want to want him.

“I shouldn’t be here.” He wrapped his hands around my wrists. He had good hands. Strong and capable-looking with thick veins. I bet when he held a gun, they didn’t even tremble. I bet they were sure and steady, and he didn’t so much as break a sweat.

“And yet, here you are. Why are you here?”

“I’ve missed your funny face.” He made slow, lazy circles on my inner wrists with the pads of his thumbs. The softest touch was often the most powerful.

“Could’ve fooled me.”

“Miss me?” he teased.

More than I should have. “You never crossed my mind.”

“You crossed mine. Hundreds of times.” His voice was low and rough, seducing me with his raw honesty.

“Hundreds?” I laughed. “I didn’t take you for the kind of guy who uses hyperboles.”

“I’m not.”

Oh. Well. I looked down at his hands that were still wrapped around my wrists, my palms still pressed against his chest as if I was warding him off yet wanting to remain close enough to feel the beating of his heart.

“Hold Me Down” by Halsey blasted from my speakers, muting the sounds of the city, the hum of traffic on the street and the lonely wail of a siren in the distance. I stared at his slightly parted lips, the bottom lip fuller than the top and fought the urge to sink my teeth into it.

“What did you think of when you thought of me?”

He moved his hand to my neck and around to the back of it, threading his fingers through my hair until it was wrapped around his hand. His mouth moved close to the shell of my ear, his voice low. “How much I fucking love your hair.”

Jaxon

My fingers thrum impatiently against my thigh as the valet attendant hands me a ticket. It’s the grand opening for the new nightclub at the estate. Nicholas hasn’t told anyone much of anything, including the name of the place. Apparently, he’s kept most of the details close to his chest. People gather at the entrance of the new club. They aren’t letting anyone inside just yet. The front of the building is covered with an oversized black sheet, not allowing anyone to get a glimpse. No members were permitted entrance through the adjoining section. My eyes scour the area hoping to find Carina. Nicholas better find an acceptable compromise that involves her. I won’t settle for anything less.

“They’re calling VIP members to the front” Uncle Richard nudges me forward. We follow other VIP members to the velvet rope. Nicholas and Valentino shake each VIPs hand before they pass. Marco glares at me but nods his head in greeting. He can’t appear unprofessional with so many eyes on them. I may be a thorn in his side, but he’ll have to tolerate it. There’s no way in hell Nicholas can blacklist me from the nightclub.

“Thanks everyone for coming out this evening” Nicholas calls out to the growing crowd.

“Welcome to the grand opening of Scandalous” Valentino’s voice booms as the black sheet falls away from the building. Murmurs of approval and clapping echo all around us.

The new nightclub matches the estate’s luxurious exterior. It’s frosted glass doors hint at a peek at what lays beyond. The exterior sign is visible for all to see. The shiny silver letters elegantly scrawled across the building make it seem like a high-end classy establishment while the name hints at something entirely different. Parking is off to the side so non-members can’t sneak into the estate. I don’t know how Nic plans to pull this off but more power to him.

Valentino and Nicholas personally escort the VIPs through the frosted doors. Another sign at the entrance has everyone pausing. Upon closer inspection, the word Scandalous is more than it seems. The letter “d” in the word is an outline of a stripper pole, while the belly of the letter is a female form curved against the pole. The faceless female’s legs extended below the word, hinting at the image of an actual woman posing for the club’s name.

“Impressive” Richard beams with approval. We wade through the gawking spectators. The hostess beams as we approach. She verifies our names then sashays over to our VIP booth.

“What’s the stage for?” I flick my thumb at the built-in stage. It isn’t one of those makeshift ones that can be easily removed. Looks like it’s going to be a focal part of the place.

“You’ll see” she winks before walking away. I chuckle not the least bit surprised that Nic is keeping everything tight lipped. We’re already here yet he still wants us in anticipation to see what’s in store.

Servers greet us with the same professionalism and familiarity as whenever we’re at the estate. Everything is new, yet familiar. Valentino and Nicholas remain at the main entrance welcoming everyone in while Marco oversees that everything inside is running smoothly. I keep craning my head trying to see if Carina is anywhere around. I’m not trying to be incognito about it. I have every right to approach her.

The DJ plays music while servers in bikinis offer body shots to willing patrons. Shirtless male servers in tight polyester, mini, black shorts with zippered fronts offer female patrons body shots. It’s easy to see why the club is named Scandalous. I’m looking forward to what Nic has planned for the place. I stretch my legs as Nicholas drones on about the different things this club offers. None of this information is new to VIPs. He motions to the stage grabbing everyone’s attention. He starts talking about erotic performances and sensuous dance numbers. Uncle Richard rubs his hands together eager to see the talent for the night. Nicholas steps away as the lights dim throughout the club. Servers turn their attention to the stage making everyone else take notice. A familiar voice belts through the speakers making my dick swell with anticipation. “Holy fuck” I breathe trying to get a good look at her.

“What?” Richard demands.

“It’s Carina and the girls” I groan as she finally comes into view. The crowd gasps while others cheer as the girls saunter onto the stage. They sway their hips to the music. Carina’s voice belts throughout the nightclub. “You got me down on the floor… “

“Is it me or can you see…” Uncle’s jaw drops as he eyes Carina’s nipples through the fringes of the dress.

“Fuck me” I lean forward trying to get a better glimpse. The lights and shadows play peekaboo with her sheer dress. It takes everything in me to remain seated while she continues to sing and sway her hips. She’s a siren luring us all in with her voice. The crowd roars just as the song ends. The girls hold hands and bow as the patrons give them a standing ovation. They disappear behind the curtains as the DJ introduces the next act. You can barely hear him with the crowd chanting for an encore performance from the girls.

“Hope they’re as good as the girls” Uncle chuckles. The girls just set a high precedence every time they step onto that stage. I can certainly help them with that. Carina and I are explosive. Let this audience get a taste of us and they’ll keep coming back for more.

“Give me feedback on this next act” Nicholas instructs Carina’s men within our earshot. “I have to check in with the girls for their next performance.”

“Like they can’t handle it themselves” Marco snickers.

That’s my queue.

“Uncle, I’ll be right back” I don’t wait for his okay. I stalk Nicholas as he walks around occupied tables and heads backstage. He ignores my glare but I don’t let it deter me. I follow him to the dark hallway towards the private suites for the performers. He has a nice setup with all of this.

“Let him pass” Nicholas sighs to the security manning the back hall. I remain hot on his heels as he approaches a private wing. “I’m working Jaxon.”

“I’m aware Nicholas” I growl irritated with the man. “We still don’t have an agreement.”

“Little busy right now” he drawls as he raps his knuckles on a set of double doors. “I’m not sure if everyone behind this door will be thrilled to see you.”

“We’ll just have to see about that, won’t we” I challenge. Carina won’t throw me out. She may not be ecstatic about my presence, but she likes having me close.

Nic shakes his head chagrined with my persistence. He opens the door and steps through. It’s disappointing to see most of the girls still dressed. They’re helping each other remove accessories and undo their hair. “That was a hell of a show ladies” Nicholas boasts as he saunters through the room. The girls jump in place, thrilled to hear his approval. Titties bounce all over the place; definitely not complaining.

“Any constructive feedback” Carina inquires. She keeps her eyes locked on him, trying valiantly to ignore my presence. She slides her stockings off, aware of my heated gaze on her.

“What did you think Jaxon?” Melissa cheerfully inquires. The other girls freeze as they realize I’m with Nicholas.

I waltz further into the room keeping my eyes on Carina who still hasn’t acknowledged me. “Excellent song choice” I reply hoping they don’t stare at my tented pants. I want to provide them with genuine feedback so I can stay in the room longer. No telling when Marco and Valentino will bust through the doors. “Loved the costume choices. Bea…” I look directly at the sultry gangster. “You fucking rocked as the badass! Great vocals overall ladies, nothing pitchy or off-key.”

Nic nods with approval at my observations. I can prove to be an asset. “I liked that you intertwined solo dances with the group number.” He adds. He’s right; each girl got their time in the spotlight. Although Carina was the main singer each of the girls were memorable in their own way.

Sati beams with the feedback. She must be the one choreographing their performances.

“We have a request” Carina strips out of her dress as she speaks. It’s hard to look at her face when she’s down to almost nothing. Desirae sighs seeing that we’re distracted. She grabs a silk robe and tosses it at her best friend.

“What’s the request” Nicholas’ gravelly voice lets me know he’s affected too. At least it isn’t just me.

“We’d like to be the last ones to perform the second set” Sati states for Carina. It’s a great idea. A memorable opening and closing number are just what Scandalous needs to get people coming back. I doubt they won’t have any problems filling this place up on a nightly basis but I’m confident Nic and the guys plan to charge a premium when the girls are performing.

“That’s a reasonable request; now if you’ll excuse us ladies.” Nicholas states as he practically drags me out of the room. I was on my best behavior. I don’t know why he’s acting like I did something wrong.

“I know what I want” I demand the moment we’re out of the dressing room. “I want to perform with Carina. It can be these kinds of sets on the weekends.”

“That’s the opposite of what we’re trying to work out” Nicholas huffs with exasperation. “Not only will I have to deal with Valentino and Marco but then I need to legally compensate you for your time. I can’t let you perform without pay and in case you forgot I’m the one in the red right now.”

“Semantics” I slash my hand in the air. “You can deal with Valentino and Marco. Tell Carina you want her to do a few numbers with me. If we don’t set that stage on fire like they just did, then all bets are off.”

“I’m still not seeing how this will settle your account” Nicholas grouses. “But I’m willing to contemplate your idea. None of my acts are performing erotic numbers yet, so this might be that edge we need.” He slows his pace as he gets lost in thought.

“Rather than credit my account I want this as my form of reimbursement. You inform her and we can have something ready by next week.” I confidently state, already having a few ideas running through my head.

“If Carina agrees, Sati will oversee your rehearsals. You will respect any constructive feedback she provides.”

“Done” I state even before he finishes his statement. Sati has a keen eye. I sure as hell will take her advice.

“Shit. Okay” Nicholas sighs, “Let me talk to the guys. Go enjoy the rest of the evening.” He stalks away without a second glance.
