Title: Ryder
Series: Scandal U #1
Author: R. Linda
Genre: New Adult/College Romance
Release Date: October 1, 2019
Publisher: Limitless Publishing

Ryder and I are finally able to have a fresh start. Attending university with the man I love makes it easy to leave all the high school drama behind me.

Unfortunately, things don’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped.
I end up sharing a dorm room with Christina, and I’m forced to see my ex boyfriend’s face on a regular basis. They already ruined my last year of high school, and clearly they’re not done with me yet.
Between Christina’s temper tantrums, Chace’s bad intentions hidden behind fake apologies, Ryder and I try to build a life together. But it’s not easy when past torments follow me wherever I go, slowly turning into a living nightmare.
Even though Ryder saved me once before, it’s different now. This isn’t high school anymore. The stakes are higher, and this time I have so much more to lose.

She was taking the three-foot rule seriously. So seriously, in fact, that she sat in the back of my car behind the passenger seat. The farthest possible point from me.

“I feel like a taxi driver with you in the back.” I angled the rear-view mirror so I could look at her.

“Three feet, Jones. Three feet.” She pushed herself into the door and tried to make herself as small as possible.

“Give it up. You’ll cave in. You know you will.”

“Give me some credit. I’m perfectly capable of keeping my distance from you.”

“No, you’re not.”

“Why?”

“We’re drawn to each other, love. Like magnets. Tethered together. The pull between is too strong. I feel it, and I know you do too,” I said.

Bailey scoffed. “Well, I’m flipping over.”

“What?”

“You said we’re magnets.”

I didn’t know where she was going with this.

“And magnets are attracted to each other,” she continued.

“I just said that.”

“But when you flip a magnet over, it repels the other magnet. I’m flipping myself over, so I won’t be attracted to you for the weekend.”

I glanced in the mirror to see her smug smile and burst out laughing. She was fucking cute when she was trying to prove me wrong.

“Not sure it works that way. You need two negatively charged ions to repel. And I’m positively charged…” I caught her gaze in the mirror. “All. The. Time.”

Her breath caught in her throat as she took in the meaning of my words. She swallowed and tore her gaze from mine to stare out the window.

One point for me.

The job comes with a long list of rules and at the top of that list is no fraternizing with students. Following the rules seemed easy enough, until a dark, tortured boy sat outside my office waiting for me. His voice told me it was his grade he was worried about, but the deep onyx pools of his eyes told me more as they shook the solid ground I’d always stood on.

Am I willing to risk my career, my carefully built reputation, to help one so filled with pain I can taste it?
Benjamin Wallace
Rejected, abused, and abandoned my entire life, all I’ve ever wanted was to be accepted, loved even. I thought going to college on a scholarship would be my ticket out of hell, but nothing good ever comes without a price. As graduation nears I find myself drawn to the mysterious professor like a moth to a flame. Laundry Librarian – “Have you ever been touched by a story so deeply, the feelings it draws out of you linger for weeks, months or even years after finishing it? Learning Curve was that kind of book for me.”

The Little Bookworm – “I love a great forbidden romance and Learning Curve is definitely now on the top of that list for me.”

A Book Lover’s Emporium Book Blog – “Forbidden? Teacher/student? M/M? Oh HELL YEAH! This book has all my favourite things!”

From Dyslexic kid with a love of Algebra to a published author, no one is more surprised to find me here, than I am. I love to write about tortured pasts and hot sex, a happily ever after that has to be worked for. My stories tend to be a little dark but with some comic relief, typically in the form of sarcasm.

Jaxon
My fingers thrum impatiently against my thigh as the valet attendant hands me a ticket. It’s the grand opening for the new nightclub at the estate. Nicholas hasn’t told anyone much of anything, including the name of the place. Apparently, he’s kept most of the details close to his chest. People gather at the entrance of the new club. They aren’t letting anyone inside just yet. The front of the building is covered with an oversized black sheet, not allowing anyone to get a glimpse. No members were permitted entrance through the adjoining section. My eyes scour the area hoping to find Carina. Nicholas better find an acceptable compromise that involves her. I won’t settle for anything less.
“They’re calling VIP members to the front” Uncle Richard nudges me forward. We follow other VIP members to the velvet rope. Nicholas and Valentino shake each VIPs hand before they pass. Marco glares at me but nods his head in greeting. He can’t appear unprofessional with so many eyes on them. I may be a thorn in his side, but he’ll have to tolerate it. There’s no way in hell Nicholas can blacklist me from the nightclub.
“Thanks everyone for coming out this evening” Nicholas calls out to the growing crowd.
“Welcome to the grand opening of Scandalous” Valentino’s voice booms as the black sheet falls away from the building. Murmurs of approval and clapping echo all around us.
The new nightclub matches the estate’s luxurious exterior. It’s frosted glass doors hint at a peek at what lays beyond. The exterior sign is visible for all to see. The shiny silver letters elegantly scrawled across the building make it seem like a high-end classy establishment while the name hints at something entirely different. Parking is off to the side so non-members can’t sneak into the estate. I don’t know how Nic plans to pull this off but more power to him.
Valentino and Nicholas personally escort the VIPs through the frosted doors. Another sign at the entrance has everyone pausing. Upon closer inspection, the word Scandalous is more than it seems. The letter “d” in the word is an outline of a stripper pole, while the belly of the letter is a female form curved against the pole. The faceless female’s legs extended below the word, hinting at the image of an actual woman posing for the club’s name.
“Impressive” Richard beams with approval. We wade through the gawking spectators. The hostess beams as we approach. She verifies our names then sashays over to our VIP booth.
“What’s the stage for?” I flick my thumb at the built-in stage. It isn’t one of those makeshift ones that can be easily removed. Looks like it’s going to be a focal part of the place.
“You’ll see” she winks before walking away. I chuckle not the least bit surprised that Nic is keeping everything tight lipped. We’re already here yet he still wants us in anticipation to see what’s in store.
Servers greet us with the same professionalism and familiarity as whenever we’re at the estate. Everything is new, yet familiar. Valentino and Nicholas remain at the main entrance welcoming everyone in while Marco oversees that everything inside is running smoothly. I keep craning my head trying to see if Carina is anywhere around. I’m not trying to be incognito about it. I have every right to approach her.
The DJ plays music while servers in bikinis offer body shots to willing patrons. Shirtless male servers in tight polyester, mini, black shorts with zippered fronts offer female patrons body shots. It’s easy to see why the club is named scandalous. I’m looking forward to what Nic has planned for the place. I stretch my legs as Nicholas drones on about the different things this club offers. None of this information is new to VIPs. He motions to the stage grabbing everyone’s attention. He starts talking about erotic performances and sensuous dance numbers. Uncle Richard rubs his hands together eager to see the talent for the night. Nicholas steps away as the lights dim throughout the club. Servers turn their attention to the stage making everyone else take notice. A familiar voice belts through the speakers making my dick swell with anticipation. “Holy fuck” I breathe trying to get a good look at her.
“What?” Richard demands.
“It’s Carina and the girls” I groan as she finally comes into view. The crowd gasps while others cheer as the girls saunter onto the stage. They sway their hips to the music. Carina’s voice belts throughout the nightclub. “You got me down on the floor… “
“Is it me or can you see…” Uncle’s jaw drops as he eyes Carina’s nipples through the fringes of the dress.
“Fuck me” I lean forward trying to get a better glimpse. The lights and shadows play peekaboo with her sheer dress. It takes everything in me to remain seated while she continues to sing and sway her hips. She’s a siren luring us all in with her voice. The crowd roars just as the song ends. The girls hold hands and bow as the patrons give them a standing ovation. They disappear behind the curtains as the DJ introduces the next act. You can barely hear him with the crowd chanting for an encore performance from the girls.
“Hope they’re as good as the girls” Uncle chuckles. The girls just set a high precedence every time they step onto that stage. I can certainly help them with that. Carina and I are explosive. Let this audience get a taste of us and they’ll keep coming back for more.
“Give me feedback on this next act” Nicholas instructs Carina’s men within our earshot. “I have to check in with the girls for their next performance.”
“Like they can’t handle it themselves” Marco snickers.
That’s my queue.
“Uncle, I’ll be right back” I don’t wait for his okay. I stalk Nicholas as he walks around occupied tables and heads backstage. He ignores my glare but I don’t let it deter me. I follow him to the dark hallway towards the private suites for the performers. He has a nice setup with all of this.
“Let him pass” Nicholas sighs to the security manning the back hall. I remain hot on his heels as he approaches a private wing. “I’m working Jaxon.”
“I’m aware Nicholas” I growl irritated with the man. “We still don’t have an agreement.”
“Little busy right now” he drawls as he raps his knuckles on a set of double doors. “I’m not sure if everyone behind this door will be thrilled to see you.”
“We’ll just have to see about that, won’t we” I challenge. Carina won’t throw me out. She may not be ecstatic about my presence, but she likes having me close.
Nic shakes his head chagrined with my persistence. He opens the door and steps through. It’s disappointing to see most of the girls still dressed. They’re helping each other remove accessories and undo their hair. “That was a hell of a show ladies” Nicholas boasts as he saunters through the room. The girls jump in place, thrilled to hear his approval. Titties bounce all over the place; definitely not complaining.
“Any constructive feedback” Carina inquires. She keeps her eyes locked on him, trying valiantly to ignore my presence. She slides her stockings off, aware of my heated gaze on her.
“What did you think Jaxon?” Melissa cheerfully inquires. The other girls freeze as they realize I’m with Nicholas.
I waltz further into the room keeping my eyes on Carina who still hasn’t acknowledged me. “Excellent song choice” I reply hoping they don’t stare at my tented pants. I want to provide them with genuine feedback so I can stay in the room longer. No telling when Marco and Valentino will bust through the doors. “Loved the costume choices. Bea…” I look directly at the sultry gangster. “You fucking rocked as the badass! Great vocals overall ladies, nothing pitchy or off-key.”
Nic nods with approval at my observations. I can prove to be an asset. “I liked that you intertwined solo dances with the group number.” He adds. He’s right; each girl got their time in the spotlight. Although Carina was the main singer each of the girls were memorable in their own way.
Sati beams with the feedback. She must be the one choreographing their performances.
“We have a request” Carina strips out of her dress as she speaks. It’s hard to look at her face when she’s down to almost nothing. Desirae sighs seeing that we’re distracted. She grabs a silk robe and tosses it at her best friend.
“What’s the request” Nicholas’ gravelly voice lets me know he’s affected too. At least it isn’t just me.
“We’d like to be the last ones to perform the second set” Sati states for Carina. It’s a great idea. A memorable opening and closing number are just what Scandalous needs to get people coming back. I doubt they won’t have any problems filling this place up on a nightly basis but I’m confident Nic and the guys plan to charge a premium when the girls are performing.
“That’s a reasonable request; now if you’ll excuse us ladies.” Nicholas states as he practically drags me out of the room. I was on my best behavior. I don’t know why he’s acting like I did something wrong.
“I know what I want” I demand the moment we’re out of the dressing room. “I want to perform with Carina. It can be these kinds of sets on the weekends.”
“That’s the opposite of what we’re trying to work out” Nicholas huffs with exasperation. “Not only will I have to deal with Valentino and Marco but then I need to legally compensate you for your time. I can’t let you perform without pay and in case you forgot I’m the one in the red right now.”
“Semantics” I slash my hand in the air. “You can deal with Valentino and Marco. Tell Carina you want her to do a few numbers with me. If we don’t set that stage on fire like they just did, then all bets are off.”
“I’m still not seeing how this will settle your account” Nicholas grouses. “But I’m willing to contemplate your idea. None of my acts are performing erotic numbers yet, so this might be that edge we need.” He slows his pace as he gets lost in thought.
“Rather than credit my account I want this as my form of reimbursement. You inform her and we can have something ready by next week.” I confidently state, already having a few ideas running through my head.
“If Carina agrees, Sati will oversee your rehearsals. You will respect any constructive feedback she provides.”
“Done” I state even before he finishes his statement. Sati has a keen eye. I sure as hell will take her advice.

“Shit. Okay” Nicholas sighs, “Let me talk to the guys. Go enjoy the rest of the evening.” He stalks away without a second glance.

Irresistible Carina

I slink into the passenger seat and watch Valentino disappear as Desirae drives away. “How was your weekend?” I decide to beat Desirae to the punch.

“I’m sure not as interesting as yours… But I did get laid so much that I needed a hot bath to soothe my lady bits… gotta abstain for a few days. Damn that man can fuck!”

I throw my head back laughing. It isn’t often that Des can’t keep up with a guy. She’s usually complaining that they’re done after five minutes and have completely neglected her. I’m starting to see a pattern her. MEN know how to please a woman. BOYS just aim to bust a nut.

“Unlike you” I playfully scoff, “Valentino took me out. He bought me some things and we had dinner at some nice place on Park Avenue.”

Desirae bounces in her seat. “Oh, that hurt” she winces. She leans to the side and continues to drive in that position.

I scrunch my face at her. “Don’t ask me to rub ointment on your shit! You need to learn your limits instead of letting the man fuck you into oblivion.”

“Worth it” Desirae singsongs. “So…” she drawls, “Have you checked your phone all weekend?”

“I had to turn the damn thing off” I shake my head in disgust. “He finally decided to fucking start harassing me Saturday afternoon. He must remember something since this is the first time he’s tried reaching out to me in two weeks.”

Desirae’s face pinches like she’s dying to say something but doesn’t know whether to share it or not. “I’m sure whatever you want to say Des is already on this phone. Just spill it so that you can spare me the bullshit.” I stare at the blinking red light letting me know I have all kinds of voicemail messages and unread text messages.

She exhales slowly causing my hackles to rise. Apparently, this is going to be big or bad, or both. What the hell did he do after we parted ways Friday evening?

“There are two things you should be aware of” Desirae begins, “The first is that there are social media pictures of you and Valentino leaving the club Friday night. Everyone’s seen it and decided to call both of us about it.”

My hands twitch wanting to pull up these so-called pictures. “Are they bad?” I quietly ask. Was I humping him in the parking lot or something? Are there cameras in his office? Why didn’t he mention anything? Surely a man of his position would know what’s out there posted about him.

“On the contrary… you two appear intimate, tasteful… Like a real couple. You make him look younger.” Desirae laughs making me smile. Valentino isn’t old, but he did confess that I’m the youngest woman he’s ever been with.

“The other thing…” she hesitates. By the tension in her voice I know this is going to be bad. She parks the car at a nearby grocery store. Yep, really bad…. “Everyone’s talking about Jaxon.”

I arch my brows waiting for the rest. This isn’t news. Where’s she going with this? Desirae nods before continuing. “They say he banged that blonde bimbo he was feeling up Friday night.”

I sigh not in the least bit surprised. Jaxon couldn’t mask the relief and irritation on his face when we’d “talked” during his drunken stupor. I doubt he even remembers the conversation.

“It gets worse” she hedges. Time to brace myself. “Apparently” she emphasizes the word, “It was so good that the bitch cried or passed out. That motivated the entire sorority to an orgy that featured Jaxon as the headliner. Word has it Pete and the other dickwads took advantage and partook in the sorority fuck-fest.”

Aaannnddd whatever little hope I had left for Jaxon is gone… I swallow the bile threatening to climb up my throat. “Well, Jaxon Wright always goes big or goes home right?” I hate that my voice trembles. There should be nothing but disgust lacing every word. Just knowing he slept with that many girls in one night makes my skin crawl. I’ve allowed him to go bareback more than one. I make a mental note to get tested for every fucking thing under the sun after classes this week.

“For what it’s worth I am sorry” Desirae whispers into the silence of the car.

A traitorous tear trickles down my cheek. “We both called it Des. This was just the kind of embarrassment I wanted to avoid when I left him the first time.” What I would give to just be back in Valentino’s condo away from all this drama. I lean my head back knowing I need to face this. I hand Desirae my phone so she can read the slew of text messages.

– Carina –
I hustle out of the busy deli. Busy being the operative word. I do a doubletake before stepping into the small place, surprised to see so many students in line. Mom and Dad insisted that the campus would be practically barren, but they were wrong. Classes aren’t in session yet but there is plenty going on. Student athletes are already on campus gearing up for their season. Students with apartment housing are trickling in. The fraternity and sorority houses are bustling with life. I am just another student on campus. I tuck the dinner I picked up for us close to my chest. Desirae went to work out and she’s easier to deal with if she’s been fed. Talk about hangry issues. The girl is a handful, but I wouldn’t have her any other way. I never had a friend like her in high school. It’s hard to imagine another like her on campus. Desirae’s feisty, fierce, and fantastic. Things are guaranteed to never be boring with her around.
I waltz back to the dorm. I can’t help but admire my new surroundings. Beautiful trees provide plenty of shade and scenery. The impressive buildings take my breath away. The performing arts center and the university bookstore call to me but I’ll have to visit them another day. The campus is like its own small town. I love the different buildings and businesses on campus. At first, I hadn’t understood why my parents insisted on leaving my car behind. It all makes sense now. Who needs a car when everything’s within walking distance? My feet almost stumble on the flat sidewalk as my gaze locks onto the most amazing set of blue eyes I’ve ever seen. Like wow… Ripples of heat course through my body as my eyes devour his ash blond hair and toned body. I hold my breath desperately trying not to audibly moan. The guy is hot as hell. Thank goodness Diego is gone. I wouldn’t want him interfering with this fine piece of man-candy. I don’t know anyone else on campus, but I would love the opportunity to get to know this guy. I bite my lip admiring his confident swagger. There’s just the right amount of playfulness in his eyes to diminish his arrogant approach. I try, and probably fail, not to appear overeager.
“Hey” his sexy drawl has my toes curling. The guy exudes confidence and sensuality. One of Diego’s friends had been like that. It had been impossible to resist him. We’d been friends with benefits until he went away to college. Maybe it’s time to find me a new friend…
“Hi” I lick my lips drawing his eyes to my mouth. I hope my olive skin hides the flush of heat rippling over me. I don’t usually blush easily. Guys come a dime a dozen. They’re easily expendable but this one is just too damn fine to pass up.
“Dinner for two” he gestures at the sandwiches in my hands.
I nod temporarily losing my tongue. It takes a moment for my brain to catch up. “Got dinner for my roommate and me.”
“Freshman year” he inquires. His eyes slowly graze over my body. I hold still while he openly admires my long black hair, olive skin, and curves. My lips curl into a smirk as his chest sharply rises at the sight of my generous breasts. I love my Latin curves and this guy obviously appreciates them too.
“Yep” I confirm, “And you?”
He smiles brightly. I almost swallow my tongue at the sight. “Junior year… What’s your name beautiful?”
Damn he’s direct. I bite back the automatic sarcastic response accustomed to the lame one-liners, but this guy is as smooth as silk. His words and body language most certainly make me feel beautiful. “Carina” I reply, rolling my “r” to emphasize my Hispanic heritage. His pupils dilate as I say my name.
“Jaxon” he breathes, making my insides flutter. It’s time to go. The guy is so smooth I almost want to forget having dinner with Desirae and just jump in the sack with him. I take a cleansing breath. The overpowering attraction to him doesn’t bode well for me. I need to get acclimated to my new environment before getting distracted by hot guys.
“Well Jaxon, it’s been a pleasure. See you around.” I don’t wait for a response. He feels dangerous. I sashay away, feeling his heated gaze on my ass. I don’t bother smothering my smile; he can’t see it.
“I’ll see you soon belleza” he calls out causing me to nearly stumble. Shivers course through my body as the word resonates within me. He winks before walking in the opposite direction. I make no qualms about openly ogling him, merely reciprocating his heated appreciation.
